Drunken Master 2

In Drunken Master 2 the story concerns the misadventures of Wong Fei Hung as he accidentally becomes involved with the affairs of the British consul, who are smuggling ancient Chinese artifacts out of the country. Fei Hung battles the henchmen of the consul using the Drunken Boxing style of martial arts. Wong Fei Hung finds that he becomes a more powerful fighter when he consumes alcohol and all hell breaks loose at the finale!

Best version: The HK disc has original Cantonese language and soundtrack but no English subtitles and its non anamorphic. It does have an alternate English dub however. The Thakral China disc is uncut Cantonese and subs but cropped.  If you don't mind English dubs and changed soundtracks the USA DVD and Blu ray do give very good picture quality (and Jackie did dub his own voice).

A miramax release which although virtually uncut have re-scored the film and given you a English dub only (although it is Jackie's own voice). Anamorphic widescreen it looks great just a shame you dont have a choice of the original language. (But they give us a French dub!). Extras include an interview with Jackie.

  1. Hey, I wanted you to know about this.

    http://www.scarecrow.com/

There is a video store in Seattle called Scarecrow video. Last time I checked, they sell a DVD of "Drunken Master II" that combines the best features of the Chinese/HK VCD, the R0 Thakral DVD, the R3 WB DVD, and the Dimension R1 DVD.

I bought this DVD back in the summer of 2012. Last time I checked, the store is still selling it. They also do shipping (that's how I got mine). You should call them over the phone if you wish to buy it.

The DVD uses the R1 anamorphic image for the entirety of the film, except for the "retarded Fei-Hung" scene. Footage of that scene plays seamlessly after the Wongs' picture is taken, and is in anamorphic format, but was cropped from the R0 DVD. And the quality of the picture definitely changes in that scene.

The DVD contains 2 cuts of the film, the WB R3 cut, and the uncut version.

    Subtitles
New English: the R1 English dubtitles. Uncut & Edited versions

Original English: The R0 English subtitles. Uncut & Edited version

Chinese, Korean, & Thai: The R3 subtitles. Edited Version only

    Audio

New English: R1 English dub: Uncut & Edited Versions

    Cantonese: Uncut & Edited Versions

R3 English dub/French/Mandarin: Edited Version only

No matter which audio option you choose, and no matter which version of the film you watch, the opening credits of the film (before it shows the train station) and the end credits use the R1 score. And the title card still says "Legend of the Drunken Master," rather than "Drunken Master II."

  2. The Thakral DVD has dreadful sound. I'm surprised that no-one ever mentions this. When are Fortune Star going to release a remastered version on Blu-ray & DVD?

  3. Warners own the rights in the Far East, so dont expect a remaster anytime soon sadly.
